“My philosophy is that everyone does better at home and that use of a facility should be a last resort if, and only if, the quality of life becomes marred by safety or cognitive issues. Support systems should be utilized and each individual should have the right to remain at home as long as is safely possible. The elderly are not a sector of society that should be “warehoused” for convenience, but should be revered for the knowledge and contributions that they have, and continue to have, in our society”.
Ms. Wimmer began her career in Senior Care in 1994 as a “Homemaker Attendant” at Mountains Community Hospital “Skilled Home Care” department. When not enough supportive care was needed, she began working as the File Clerk in the Skilled Care Office, learning about how Medicare based Home Care was mandated. In 1996 she became certified as a Certified Nurses Aide and a Certified Home Health Aide and began her new career assisting patients with personal care issues such as bathing, dressing, and nutritional assistance, in both the Skilled Home Care and Skilled Nursing Facility arenas. She also received training as a “Rehabilitation Nursing Assistant”, assisting Physical Therapy with continuing exercise programs upon discharge from Physical Therapy. When massive changes were made by Medicare in 1996, thereby limiting how often patients could be seen in the home, she went to work at the local Skilled Nursing Facility and fell in love working with the elderly. Noting each of their differences, and having been left with a large private practice of those who were left with no assistance, the idea for a business to support people at home came to fruition. While enjoying her work in the facility, the field based work was what drew her to the conclusion that the need for help at home was much greater. So in 1999, she quit her position at the hospital and launched “The Senior Connection”. Starting with three “General Care Providers” (two whom still work with her), the business grew and now boasts 21 wonderful and gifted “Care Providers”. In 2004, Ms. Wimmer, after several months of study and an intensive four day course and testing, became a “Certified Senior Advisor” and member of the “Society of Certified Senior Advisors”. The Society is a wonderful organization that is hard at work assuring fair and ethical treatment of all seniors in various different fields. Ms. Wimmer continues to expand her vision of working with seniors and still enjoys working in the field at least 30 hours per week providing personal care and supervision of all her clients and Care Providers.
